Which direction do you turn the thread protector to remove it?

The heating suggestion helped me get that nut off, and it only took a grill lighter and small pipe wrench to do the trick. Unfortunately, the heat temporarily softened the barrel nut, too, which got chewed up by my wrench by accident, but KelTec is sending me replacement nuts for free due to having the problems.
