I guess my topic headline says it all. I don’t want to waste my CD Hornady rounds to sight in my irons or red dot! What do y’all do?

Either find something that shoots the same or just suffer through the expensive stuff. Either way requires shooting some of the goods to find out where the real stuff is going to hit.
I suggest you sight it in with the same bullet weight as defensive rounds first. Then check your defensive rounds for accuracy. Same with a hunting firearm.
I guess I’ll be using both practice and defense ammo!
When y’all have done it with both, what was your results?
TT
Once I have it sighted in with the defense ammunition, I shoot the cheap stuff to see how it differs. As long as you know the difference between the two groups you can practice knowing the defense ammo will put it on the X when the training ammo will put it on the other consistent spot. Make sense?
Federal sells boxes of train and protect ammo.
For other, just compare their ballistics from published data.
Yes. Sight with what your using to punch the most important holes.
If you’re careful and ok with a lil math - three shots should put you on followed by a few to confirm.
I’m also careful to sight a cold barrel; cause ammo is expensive. Better to punch on first round.
Awesome info Y’all!
Mic, that’s a great idea. I find it hard figure out how to bore sight with the Sub, but I have a laser bore round.
Any one sight a sub looking through the bore? If so how’s you do it? (since it opens at the breach)
What about a laser bore round? I like the idea only problem I see is inconsistent, China made crap!

I’ve been using a laser bore sight for years & it depends how tight you put the laser in. To many fluctuations. I rely on the laser just to get me on the paper target first shot only When you can’t bore sight the firearm. Good Luck. Ballistic tables/charts really help with bullet drop & windage.
Publisher data I’ve found is a load of crap. Is it 2", 3" ,4" 6" handgun barrel tested or a 16", 20" 24" rifle barrel tested. It all make a difference. Publishers usually want the most impressive results to show how better their bullet is compared to others AKA sales gimmick.
Thanks, Dirt, (for short, lol),
I hear ya! I’ll get her on the paper today with the laser and go from there. I do have some ballistic targets!
Wife’s going for firearms tactics training today, I’ll zero in while she’s shooting!
I’ll report back.

Federal has all theirs 9mm data at 4" barrel.
So I used the sight bore laser at the range today. To my surprise it worked great! I was able to zero in with in 6 shots! However, adjusting the OEM sight on the Sub was a PITA! I bought an AR sight adjustment tool and couldn’t get it to work with this sight! The detent kept getting stuck or wouldn’t go down with the tool! I had to hold it down with an Allen key and turn the sight with a mini screwdriver! I’m glad I order the Redlion flip Up/Dn sight! Hopefully it will be much better to adjust!
Has anyone else had a hard time adjusting elevation?
TT
Hell No!
You’re sighting in your weapon, but on the other hand, since your defensive ammo is Hornady CD then;
Hell Ya!
Shoot it all away.
Since it cost so much, shoot it into water, and create art, make jewelry out of it.
(or take a pic of it and use it as an avatar for commentary…lol)
Then go to Underwoodammo.com and get some Xtreme Defender, hunter, penetrator, etc., and be %+ more effective when the unfortunate time arrives to use it.
As an old-timer (one way older than my old arse) once explained to me: no two firearms shoot exactly the same and every brand of ammo shoots differently…
A good example-when I bought my Walmart Special Ruger 10/22 I bought a buttload of CCI Stingers. A complete waste of money as the rifle will NOT shoot them with any sort of accuracy! But CCI SGBs turned it into a tack driver. Go figure. Same ammo maker but totally different results.
I say try a box of everything you can find/afford, then pick the most accurate in your particular gun for EDC
Hunting is a different matter but for defense did you know that statistically you’ll only be shooting 7 yards? 1 MOA difference isnt going to matter one bit. Heck ten MOA off at 7 yards will still put the bad guy down.
I carry a Colt 1911 Officer’s Model - got it back in the '80s on the advice of a long-time cop I knew. He’d worked homicide for years, then took over the (big city) range before his retirement. He used to take me down to the range on Sundays (literal barrels of ammo). The official course in those days ran from 4 yds to 25 yds, so a .45 “pocket pistol” had to be pretty accurate. The range ammo was. At the time, the Federal Hydra-Shok was the best he had tested, and it also shot dead to point of aim.
However - this particular gun only liked certain ammo. It only shot dead on, or at the 11 o’clock position. Never anything else. I can’t explain it, but I can say that at even 10 yds a round at center mass would hit up in the vicinity of the shoulder. That’s not great, especially in a gunfight where you might already be to over-amped to make that great center hold. I say you should make sure of where it hits, regardless of intended use. It’s never a bad thing to understand your firearm and have confidence in it and your ammo.
I like reading all of these stories and getting all of this great advice! I hate to be stuck in the past, but man, I miss the old days and all those who have passed before me! Maybe it’s because I’m just getting old.
Great stories, well put everyone,

Never publicly state that if have to shoot someone in self defense that you will “shoot to kill” as you have just announced that it is your intention to execute anyone who poses a threat to you. In public discourse as well as statements to the police after an incident it is more appropriate to state that you “shot to stop the threat”. “Dead can’t sue”. True, but you can bet their family will. Statistically 7 out of 8 people shot with a handgun survive. So if it is your intention to “kill” the threat then you may have to continue shooting the subject even after he is no longer able to be a threat. And that would be subject to a charge of murder. - retired LE
